From Mary Corbet's Needle n Thread March 8, 2019: Folk Embroidered Felt Birds is a new book packed full of – you guessed it! – folk embroidered felt birds! It’s one of those books that just makes me happy when I flip through it. Folk Embroidered Felt Birds is a project book. The projects are small, three-dimensional birds made from felt, stuffed and embroidered. The cover is the seller for me. I know, I know! Don’t judge a book by its cover and all that. But really – a flamingo AND a puffin? With those legs? And those feet? I see this book being perfect for those who like to make. The birds are perfect for whimsical ornaments and delightful gifts. What a great way to pass on a bit of cheer to a friend on a birthday – or out of the blue for no reason at all! The projects in the book are all darling! And the instructions are excellent and very accessible. If you enjoy making things and you like birds, folk art, and felt, this book would be right up your alley! I’m pretty sure it will put a smile on your face!
Booklist May 2019 Lapierre (Fabulous Felt, 2016) has assembled another unique craft book that captures her nouveau-folk aesthetic, rendered in felt; this time, it's all about birds. There is coherence among the patterns, but they're hardly repetitive. The designs range from the expected traditional folk pattern of the pheasant or the hen tothe sleeker stork and flamingo, from an almost three-dimensional blue tit to an elaborately tailed peacock.Though the written instructions are relatively short, there is plenty of space devoted to close-up photographic detail of finished pieces and illustrated patterns for the embroidery. Lapierre provides clear introductory instructions on suggested materials and basic embroidery stitches, but the small size of the finished projects (based on the provided templates, most are a little over six inches long) and the detailed stitching work required to finish them make this an ideal challenge for more-experienced crafters.
Corinne Lapierre developed a passion for crafts and textiles from a very young age, and has always had an avid desire to learn about traditional techniques such as weaving, dyeing, silk painting and embroidery. She studied Fine Art in France before moving to the UK to study Fashion Design in Manchester. After working as a fashion designer for a few years, Corinne studied millinery, through which she discovered felt and its many qualities. In 2009 Corinne started her own craft business as a felt maker and quickly realised there was a demand for craft kits using good quality, natural materials. Her company, based in an old Baptist school in Leeds, UK, sells an expanding range of craft kits and patterns designed for adults and children. Corinne makes regular appearances on Create & Craft TV and lives in Yorkshire with her partner, their three children and two cats.
