Sly the Sleuth and the Pet Mysteries

Illustrated by Heather Maione

Age 7-9 years | Grades 2-4
There are some strange new pets in Sly's neighborhood: a cat on a diet that keeps getting fatter, a fish that seems angry at its owner, and a peculiar pet named Wilson that suddenly disappears!
Only Sly the Sleuth can solve these mysteries. Grade-schooler by day, private detective by afternoon, Sly (a.k.a Sylvia) uses her sharp wits and reasoning skills to get to the bottom of these odd goings-on.
Donna Jo Napoli teams up with her son, Robert Furrow, and illustrator Heather Maione to create a heroine who is not only smart and spunky, but also tremendously funny.
"Clear some shelf space….Sylvia, a.k.a. 'Sly,' solves three local mysteries involving oddly behaved pets. She uses an uncontrived combination of sharp observation, careful reasoning, and the occasional flash of insight…. Maione inks plenty of lighthearted illustrations, mostly neighborhood scenes, for this engaging series opener." Kirkus Reviews
Donna Jo Napoli is both a linguist and a writer of children's and young adult fiction. Some of her work includes Treasury of Greek Mythology, Stones in Water, Treasury of Norse Mythology, and Daughter of Venice. She has five children and eight grandchildren. She dreams of moving to the woods and becoming a naturalist. She loves to garden, bake bread, dance, and make pottery. View titles by Donna Jo Napoli
Robert Furrow lives to experience, teach, and write about the natural wonders of our world (especially birds). He grew up exploring the woods of Pennsylvania, but he now lives in California's Central Valley, where he is an assistant professor of teaching in wildlife, fish, and conservation biology at the University of California at Davis and conducts research. Here his winters are full of swirling, squealing flocks of starlings. As an educator, he teaches students about California's natural history, and at home he gardens with his wife and daughter to create a yard humming with native bees, butterflies, and birds. His passion for birding extends beyond the home, as he leads local bird-watching walks for the community. View titles by Robert Furrow
Heather Maione loved dolls when she was a child, though not quite as much as she loved to draw. The illustrator of numerous children's books, she lives on Long Island with her husband and two children. View titles by Heather Maione
