Every great show has a Halloween episode! We brewed up a Morning Booooooook Buzz for October with the aim to fill librarians’ trick-or-treat TBR lists with sweet and scary book picks. Whether or not you brought the coffee, the pumpkin spiced lattes, or your love for a fall theme—we dared to bring on the books (with some costume touches to boot!). Our October MBB hosts selected some chilling picks to kick off the convo this month: What is your favorite scary book? Hosts Jen C., Maureen, and Sharnell discussed their picks:

Jan C. selected THE MURDER OF MR. WICKHAM by Claudia Gray

Jen C.: “I know THE MURDER OF MR. WICKHAM is not the scariest book there is but that’s how I roll. If you haven’t checked this out, this is a really super cute mystery series by Claudia Gray.”

Maureen selected THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE by Shirley Jackson

Maureen:
“I went classic. I’m sure you all know
THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE
by Shirley Jackson —you can’t go wrong with that, and I do love a good horror book. I’ve read it several times.”

Sharnell selected THEME MUSIC by T. Marie Vandelly

Sharnell: “I picked THEME MUSIC by T. Marie Vandelly. I didn’t know what to expect going into this and I definitely had the creeps after I read it. So I highly suggest it if you like that sort of thing.”

OK —we LOVE a great reading list! CHECK OUT some of YOUR favorite scary reads as shared during the October 2023 Morning Book Buzz:

Since its publication in 1897 Dracula has enthralled generations of readers with the alluring malevolence of its undead Count, the most famous vampire in literature. Though Bram Stoker did not invent vampires, his novel helped catapult them to iconic stature, spawning a genre of stories and movies that flourishes to this day. A century of imitations has done nothing to diminish the fascination of Stoker’s tale of a suave and chilling monster as he stalks his prey from a crumbling castle in Transylvania’s Carpathian mountains to an insane asylum in England to the bedrooms of his swooning female victims. A classic of Gothic horror, Dracula remains an irresistible entertainment of undying appeal.

A classic of modern American horror from the undisputed master, Stephen King, now available in trade paperback in anticipation of the publication of a long-awaited sequel, Doctor Sleep (Scribner, Fall '13).
