Carnegie Selection Committee members Annie Bostrom and Susan Maguire along with Booklist Adult Books Editor Donna Seaman had an hour-long conversation about the six books shortlisted for the 2019 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction (Francisco Cantú’s The Line Becomes a River: Dispatches from the Border, Kiese Laymon’s Heavy: An American Memoir, Beth Macy’s Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America, Esi Edugyan’s Washington Black, Rebecca Makkai’s The Great Believers, and Tommy Orange’s There There). In addition to discussions of each book and appropriate read-alikes, the program also featured authors Esi Edugyan, Kiese Laymon, and Rebecca Makkai, in conversation with the Booklist adult editors.
