We’re thrilled that this year’s Oscar Nominations include some of our favorite movies inspired by some of our favorite books!

The Martian
Based on Andy Weir’s novel of the same name, The Martian tells the story of an astronaut who is mistakenly presumed dead and left behind on Mars and depicts his struggle to survive and others’ efforts to rescue him. Matt Damon is nominated for Best Actor and the film is nominated for Best Picture, Best Production Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Writing – Adapted Screenplay.

The Danish Girl
Based on David Ebershoff’s novel of the same name, The Danish Girl follows the life of Danish painter Lili Elbe, one of the first known recipients of sex reassignment surgery. Eddie Redmayne is nominated for Best Actor and Alicia Vikander is nominated for Best Supporting Actress. The film is nominated for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.

What Happened, Miss Simone?
A biography of incandescent soul singer and Black Power icon Nina Simone, one of the most influential, provocative, and least understood artists of our time. The film is nominated for Best Documentary Feature.
