Passionate fans of Terry Brooks’s internationally bestselling Shannara fantasy novels now have reason to celebrate; MTV is adapting the popular books for TV. Director Jon Favreau and Smallville writing/directing duo Al Gough and Miles Millar are teaming up to launch the epic fantasy drama project.
The Shannara series first started in 1977 with the novel The Sword of Shannara, and totals 25 books. Brooks will release three additional Shannara books in 2014. Producers plan to base the first season on The Elfstones of Shannara.
On the transition from page to film Brooks said, “I believe we have formed the perfect team to bring Shannara to life onscreen. The adaptation of these books is very important to me, and I believe we are on the right track in our endeavor to create an epic television series that both new and old fans of the books will love.”
A Shannara series seems to be a good fit for the MTV audience. Recently the supernatural drama Teen Wolf, based on the 1980s Michael J. Fox feature film, has proved to be a hit for the network.
