Dreams of Joy author Lisa was interviewed recently on St. Louis’ HEC-TV for an in-depth discussion on her writing process and the books she has written to date (including Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and Shanghai Girls.) During “A Conversation with Lisa See,” the author spoke about the research she conducts during while writing her novels. See talks about how important research is to her writing: she is careful to detail Chinese culture to make the stories in her novels come to life. While researching See spends time in the countries she writes about, interviews real refugees, and tries to experience everyday things her characters would encounter such as the cuisine they would eat. She also speaks of the universal relationships she writes for her characters in so that all her readers can connect to their journeys of self-reflection and self-discovery.
